alive.

A sealed terrarium is nearly self-sufficient. These are the small things it still needs from you.

Intervention
Minimal
Humidity
Self-regulating
01 · Light

Bright, indirect.

Place the vessel within 1–2 metres of a north or east-facing window. Direct summer sun will overheat the sealed interior and stress the moss.

A few hours of gentle morning light is ideal. The glass should never feel warm to the touch.

Avoid: south-facing direct sun · radiators · air vents
02 · Moisture

Watch the glass.

A healthy sealed terrarium fogs lightly in the morning and clears by midday. This is the water cycle working correctly, no intervention needed.

If condensation disappears entirely for more than a week, open briefly and mist the moss with a few spritzes of room-temperature water, then reseal.

Mist only if: no condensation for 7+ days
03 · Temperature

Stable and cool.

Keep between 12–22 °C. Moss is a temperate plant and prefers cool stability over warmth. Sharp temperature swings cause stress and browning.

Do not place on windowsills in winter, the cold glass at night can shock the ecosystem. A few centimetres from the window is fine.

Ideal range: 14–20 °C · avoid below 8 °C
Seasonal almanac·What to expect through the year
Spring
What you'll see
New growth at the tips of the moss. Brighter green. The terrarium is most active.
Light advice
Move slightly closer to window as days lengthen. Watch for overheating as sun gets stronger.
Intervention
None expected. Check condensation cycle is present.
Summer
What you'll see
Slower growth. Possible slight yellowing if too warm. Condensation heavier on hot nights.
Light advice
Move away from windows in a south-facing room. Keep out of direct afternoon sun at all costs.
Intervention
If glass feels warm, relocate. Mist only if condensation absent for 7+ days.
Autumn
What you'll see
Growth resumes. Deep greens return. Moss enters a productive phase.
Light advice
Supplement with a grow lamp if days become very short and dark.
Intervention
None. Best season to observe the water cycle clearly.
Winter
What you'll see
Dormancy. Growth slows or stops. This is correct. The moss is resting.
Light advice
Keep on a desk lamp for 8–10 hrs/day if natural light is insufficient.
Intervention
Avoid windowsills at night. Do not heat the room beyond 20 °C near the vessel.
Troubleshooting·Common questions
The glass isn't fogging anymore.
The water cycle has slowed. Open the vessel, mist the moss lightly with room-temperature water (3–4 spritzes), then reseal. Give it 48 hours before assessing further.
Moisture · Priority: low
Some moss is turning brown at the edges.
Usually a heat or light issue. Move the vessel away from windows and check it doesn't sit near any heat source. Some browning at the base is natural die-back and not a problem.
Light · Priority: medium
There's black growth on the substrate.
This is likely algae caused by too much direct light. Move the vessel immediately. In a sealed system algae competes with moss; if it persists, contact the studio.
Algae · Priority: high
The seal looks dry or cracked.
This should not happen with any Komorebi vessel, all stoppers are tested before despatch. If you see this, contact the studio immediately and we'll reseal or replace the piece.
