Does Fashion Still Matter? An Introduction to Komorebi

By Komorebi

You’d have to be living under a rock to see that the fashion industry is going through a bit of a crisis intervention period. While reading through yet another article highlighting the poor working conditions and unsustainable supply chains in the fashion industry, we at Komorebi sought to educate ourselves and ask if there was a way to deliver good quality clothing at affordable prices without adding to the ongoing environmental degradation. We quickly learned that the problem with the fashion industry's environmental impact is a rather simple and straightforward one: Firstly, that the overconsumption of cheap clothing leads to unethical working conditions and high pollution rates.
Currently, the fashion industry is on route to take up a quarter of the world's carbon budget by 2050 (Barclays).

Secondly, that cyclical new trends is unsustainable and leads to an intolerable amount of contributing waste for our planet. The average piece of clothing bought in 2020 will be in landfill within a year of its life due to constantly shifting trends.

Not another ethical fashion brand….please

We at Komorebi are trying to challenge the way that our predecessors have approached producing clothes. We understand that we can be perceived as part of the problem. After all, 80 billion new pieces of clothing are produced annually across the globe, 400% more than the amount we consumed just two decades ago. So where does that leave us? Are we a part of the problem?

Komorebi likes to assess the importance of our clothes by asking: What do you put on your body and why should that matter?

Not only does Komorebi's supply chain operate on a carbon negative basis, but we are also the only carbon negative clothing brand that does not use any animal products. Carbon negative metamorphosizes our process from a contributing pollutant to off setter, instead bringing a positive effect to the planet through the making and purchasing of our clothing i.e. through our initiatives your purchases help to offset carbon, not create it.

We account for every step of our process and we make sure we offset every inch of this process one-hundred fold. An acknowledgement has been made to undo the damages of our predecessors while ensuring style and comfort remains untarnished. We also do not follow trends; a comfortable sweat is a timeless addition to your wardrobe that you can keep for years to come.
At the forefront of green-washers and green labels, there is tension laid out between environmental activists and trendsetters, bargain hunters and consumers.

We hope, although David and not Goliath, that our small microcosmic movement will show that what you put on your back can give back to our lovely home, courtesy of mother nature. We recognize there is always work to be done. We are here to do the dirty work for you so that you can wear Komorebi guilt-free.
